While the airport doesn’t have the traffic that characterizes many of the Florida airports, it’s not exactly small – it covers 24,960 acres.
Jet Charter to Dade Collier
Dade Collier airport isn’t in the heart of a Florida tourist area, but it’s just 36 miles west of Miami’s business district and about 60 miles west of Miami Beach. The airport is in a prime location if vacation or work goals include exploring the Florida Everglades or viewing the Big Cyprus National Preserve. The airport may also be convenient for Florida residents that live closer to the Everglades or that wish to avoid the crowds of the busier airports.
Permission is required to use the Dade Collier airport, so jet charters should be planned ahead of time.
History of Dade Collier
Dade Collier airport was originally intended to be the largest airport in the world when construction began in 1968. The airport’s design would have included 10 runways and the airport would have covered 39 square miles. The location of the airport was seen as an advantage for supersonic aircraft, which were thought to be the future of air travel.
The plans for the airport changed mainly because environmentalists were concerned about the impact that such a large airport would have on the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades. The ending of the Boeing 2707 program also stagnated the progression of supersonic air travel. Construction stopped after the single runway was built.
Dade Collier Airport Current Uses
Dade Collier airport has been primarily used for training. The remote location and the lengthy runway make it ideal for new pilots. The airport is also a convenient alternative for general aviation.
