Instrument Flight Rules (IFR)
What Are Instrument Flight Rules (IFR)?
Instrument flight rules, or IFR, are rules that determine whether or not a pilot can fly safely during times of limited visibility. IFR can allow pilots to fly in cloud cover, low visibility, or in inclement weather by using their instruments and radio for navigation. In order to do this, pilots must first obtain IFR ratings, which require training.
