Safety is of the utmost importance for private jet charters. Many passengers who choose private jet charter over flying commercial do so because of safety concerns. Pilots and private jet operators have strict safety standards that they must meet. There are several safety rating systems that pilots and operators can qualify for. Wyvern is a highly respected rating system because of its strict safety standards. But what exactly is the Wyvern Rating System?

What Is Wyvern?

Wyvern is a company independent of any airline or private jet operator or broker. The company offers safety audit services in addition to their safety certifications. Although the FAA has safety requirements that all pilots and operators must meet, Wyvern’s system is stricter. If an operator is Wyvern certified, then you can rest assured that your flight will be a safe one.

Wyvern Registered Operator

A Wyvern Registered Operator is an operator that has registered with Wyvern. The operator provides necessary compliance information to Wyvern regarding pilots, aircraft, and the operator itself. This data is accessible to anyone who is a Wyvern member. This means that anyone chartering a private jet through a Wyvern member can access this information so they can know before their flight everything they want to know about the qualifications and safety records of their aircraft and pilot.

Wyvern Wingman Standard

The Wyvern Wingman Standard is Wyvern’s own strict safety qualification. This is Wyvern’s highest qualification. It requires that pilots and operators meet not only international safety standards but also Wyvern’s own higher standards. Operators must also allow Wyvern to perform audits in order to guarantee that they’re maintaining those standards over time.

Wingman Audits

In order to qualify for the Wingman certification, an operator must first undergo an audit involving a two-day-long on-site inspection by Wyvern’s own safety inspectors. The requirements for passing this inspection go above and beyond the requirements set by the FAA and other flight associations. Further audits are required every 24 months following the initial audit for the certification in order to maintain the qualification.

Pilot Requirements

In addition to safety requirements for the operator itself, the Wyvern Wingman certification also includes requirements for pilots. Pilots must have a certain number of flight hours within both the last 90 days and within the last 365 days in order to keep their Wyvern Wingman rating. Both the captain and the second-in-command of the flight must meet those flight hour requirements. This means that passengers will have experienced pilots who have maintained their skills.

Wyvern PASS Program

Any passenger flying on a private jet charter that is certified by Wyvern can request a due-diligence report as part of Wyvern’s PASS program. This report is trip-specific, meaning that it’s conducted right before the flight. There are two types of reports: the Registered Standard PASS and the Wingman Standard PASS. The Registered Standard PASS reports the information that the operator has provided to Wyvern for its status as a Registered Operator. 

The Wingman Standard PASS is for those who have received the Wingman certification and is much more detailed than the Registered Standard PASS. The Wingman Standard PASS involves a 150+ point inspection prior to the flight. This inspection report confirms details such as personnel training for crew and pilots, accident records, background checks, and more.
