Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS)
What Does the Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) Do?
An automatic terminal information service, or ATIS, is the broadcast of relevant aeronautical information to pilots in at or in the area around the airport. ATIS information includes information such as weather conditions, available approaches, active runways, and NOTAMs, or Notices to Airmen, which are alerts about potential hazards and other urgent information. Pilots generally listen to ATIS broadcasts before contacting air traffic control when approaching an airport, as this reduces the workload of the air traffic controllers.
