The airport operates 24/7 and contains two runways.
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport was built in 1941 for the purpose of training Naval Aviators during World War II. The airport was originally called West Prospect Satellite Field. Fort Lauderdale deeded the airport to the city of Fort Lauderdale in 1947 and it began to be used as a public airport.
Two rare Florida native species, the Florida burrowing owl and the gopher tortoise, call Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport home. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Facility at FXE was named the Most Outstanding LEED New Construction Project by the U.S. Green Building Council in November 2016. The airport was also the first general aviation airport in the U.S. selected to receive a Global Entry kiosk.
