Local Area Augmentation System (LAAS)

A local area augmentation system, or LAAS, is a landing system that aircraft use to land at airports. LAAS are found at both private and public airports and consist of receivers both at the airports and on board aircraft. The airport-based receivers transmit data about weather and ideal approaches that will reduce noise levels and avoid obstacles as the aircrafts land. Each airport-based receiver sends this data to a central location at the airport, which then transmits the information on to the receiver onboard the aircraft.
