What Does Segment Mean in the Aviation Industry?

Segments are divisions of time or distance (of which there are at least two). Segments can be sections of time or distance and are, in the case of private flights, usually in reference to the route. Route segments are usually from one point to another and are clearly delineated in the navigational aid and flight plan. Other types of segments are segments of the flight, which include approach, departure, cruise, and more.
